What equals WOW in design terms? Buildings that blend seamlessly into their natural environment? Crazily beautiful rooms that you want to replicate at home? Or is remarkable hotel design about innovation and pure comfort? We can’t decide.

The 3 Nominees for Remarkable Design

Areias do Seixo, Lisbon Coast, Portugal

The design at this stunning eco hotel is blindingly unique, taking the colours and designs of India and Morocco and blending them with modern minimalism and lots of imagination. The results? Extraordinary bedrooms and irresistible bathrooms: beds framed with driftwood, gold Chinese cabinets, pod-like wood-burners suspended from ceilings, burnished silver lamps, and indoor-outdoor tubs lined in concrete.

Tierra Patagonia, Torres del Paine National Park, Chile

Hidden behind a bluff, this luxurious adventure hotel suddenly emerges from the dramatic Patagonian steppe. It was designed by 3 of Chile’s leading architects to blend into its environment, with a living roof, native lenga-wood walls, and a long, flowing structure that snakes along the shore of Lake Sarmiento. Inside, clean Scandinavian lines blend with Patagonian tradition, and floor-to-ceiling windows let the view take centre stage.

The Outpost, Kruger National Park, South Africa

The bold design of this Modernist safari lodge both celebrates and contrasts with the amazing African landscape. Italian-born architect Enrico Daffonchio created clean-lined rooms in steel, concrete and canvas, cantilevered over a rocky hillside and linked by raised walkways. Bathtubs and beds overlook the bush; sleep and soak with the sides open to experience wild nature at close quarters.
